As the number of pet owners in Mumbai continues to grow, the demand for pet-friendly housing options has also increased. In recent years, more and more people are considering their pets as an important part of their family and are looking for homes that not only accommodate them, but also provide facilities for their furry friends.

According to a survey conducted by a popular housing portal, more than 40 percent of Mumbai's population has at least one pet. However, pet-friendly housing options remain limited in the city. Many residential complexes have stringent rules against pets, which make it difficult for pet owners to find suitable accommodation.

Due to this growing demand, a few developers have started including pet-friendly amenities in their residential projects. These amenities include designated areas for pet exercises and playtime, dog walking parks, pet spas, and even in-house veterinary facilities. Such facilities have become a major selling point among homebuyers in Mumbai.

“Pet-friendly amenities are a necessity for many city dwellers who refuse to compromise on their furry friends’ comfort. The market for pet-friendly housing is becoming increasingly competitive, with many developers now providing a range of pet amenities to attract potential buyers,” says Nayan Shah, President of the Confederation of Real Estate Developers' Association of India (CREDAI).

However, developing pet-friendly housing is easier said than done. Developers need to ensure that the properties remain hygienic and safe for all residents and their pets. This means creating designated areas for animals to relieve themselves, ensuring that pets receive regular vaccinations, and enforcing rules that curb excessive barking or aggressive behavior.

Apart from developers, even pet owners themselves need to take responsibility for their pets. It’s important for them to ensure that their pets are well-trained, vaccinated and healthy. They must also make sure that they clean up after their pets and follow all relevant laws and regulations.

“At the end of the day, pet ownership is a responsibility, and pet owners need to ensure that they respect the rights of others who share their living space. They must make sure that their pets do not cause any disturbance or harm to others,” says Shah.

It remains to be seen whether developers will continue to invest in pet-friendly housing, or if it remains just a trend. However, there’s no doubt that this trend is here to stay in Mumbai. As more and more city dwellers acquire pets, the demand for pet-friendly housing will only continue to grow.
